Description
Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Set on a remote island during the Second
World War, South Pacific tracks two parallel romances: One between a Navy
nurse and a wealthy French plantation owner, the other between a young
American officer and a native girl. The songs are among the finest in
any American musical: "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger
than Springtime," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair,"
"This Nearly Was Mine."
This production features the directing debut of Peter Stein at Theatre
in the Grove. Peter, who holds a BA in creative writing, has numerous
plays to his credit as director, playwright and actor. His understanding
of acting and directing brings a freshness and excitement to this production
that will create a buzz in the house. The musical talent he has cast will
melodically soothe you and blast you out of your seat, all at the same
time.
Haylie Swenson (you saw her as Chava in Fiddler on the Roof) plays Nellie.
Her high notes might just break glass. Pretty and petite, she is just
a delight to watch. David McHarg's touching performance as the romantic
lead (Emile de Beque) captivates the young-at-heart of every age. Jacob
Mott (Lt. Joseph Cable) returns to Oregon after 2 years at the American
Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York. We reap the rewards of his training
in this handsome young man's melodious voice. Josh Varde-Laguana (the
Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz) is Seabee Luther Billis. His strong baritone
and comedic timing alone will make you want to see this show again. Mark
Barrett (who doubles as set designer and master
carpenter) returns for his 16th production at TITG as Captain Brakett.
